Well, she was nice enough to let him eat six peanuts out of her hand, as he lacked the strength to hold them all in one hand.
Then he toddled back to his garbage can and after a laborious effort, clambered atop it again. The name wasn't a great one, but it was a name, which meant someone needed something to call him by. That was good. So had the six peanuts been. His mouth had barely remembered what to do. Or had the strength to do it. Chewing hurt.
So did watching as Poke screwed up the plan he gave her.
The first mistake she made was he choice of bully. She needed a guy who made it on size alone, intimidating people. She needed someone big and dumb, brutal but controllable. Instead, she thinks she needs somebody small. So, she picks Achilles, who's small and mean and smart and quick. But he has a gimp leg, so she thinks she can get him on the ground easier. No, stupid! The issue isn't getting him down. Anybody will go down the first time because they won't expect it. The trick to his plan was picking somebody who will stay down.
No point getting mad at her. Not when her version of the plan is about to be executed. Lets see what Achilles has to offer.
Well, he's sharp. Possibly too sharp. Careful Poke! No, his Gimp leg leaves him stuck. It's okay, he's down. Bean pushes through the crowd. The little kids (all of whom are still bigger than he is) let him through. They know who he is. As he gets to the front, Poke is telling Achilles how things are going to be run. As Bean looks at him, looks into his eyes, he knows something. How he knows it, he isn't sure, but he knows. This, is a kill or be killed moment.
"Kill him," Bean urges.
It's all he can do. He doesn't have the strength to fully do the deed himself.
Poke hesitates, let's Achilles keep talking. Gives him a moment of opportunity. He takes it. He calls them family. That's what they all want, isn't it? To belong somewhere. A crew is something. Family? Family is ten times better. Big, strong guy (relatively, at least) calls the little ones family. That's it. Too late to kill him now. He's family.
It's too late, but Poke raises her cinderblock as if she's going to do the deed anyway.
"No. You can't. He's family now," Bean says.
Poke lowers the cinderblock, and then tells him to get lost. It's understandable, in some ways. He isn't a part of her crew. Thing is? This isn't Poke's crew any more. This is Achilles family. But, Bean and Achilles are the only one's who actually understand what's gone on here. Yet. Because everyone else is stupid.
Mind you? Given how well Achilles can do this? He makes them love him, within fifteen minutes. They're eating out of his hand. Literally, given he's got a handful of raisins he's offering.
If he can do this, why hasn't he done it before now? After all, he's clearly not stupid. Maybe because everyone seems to look up for power. The people above you, they never want to share power. Why would they? But the people below you? Give them hope, give them respect and they'll give you all their power. Because they don't think they have any, so they don't mind giving it up.
That's the kind of person Bean doesn't want to be. The one that gives up power. Because, he does have power. Any time someone listens to what he says, he has power.
